We got our Irish up

March 5, 2012 by Kevin C. Walsh

Cardinal Dolan, describing the Bishops’ reaction to some of the events surrounding the contraceptives mandate:

We got our Irish up when leaders in government seemed to be assigning an authoritative voice to Catholic groups that are not the bishops. If you want an authoritative voice, go to the bishops.

I’m delighted to see other websites also spotlighting the HHS mandate, the most serious assault on religious liberty in this country’s history. Keep up the good work!

Watch out, Cardinal Dolan, and watch out, Professor Walsh, for claiming any particular Irish authority for the bishops’ taking political positions. That’ll get skeptics to go back and read the Christmas dinner scene from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

“Didn’t the bishops of Ireland betray us in the time of the union when bishop Lanigan presented an address of loyalty to the Marquess Cornwallis? Didn’t the bishops and priests sell the aspirations of their country in 1829 in return for catholic emancipation? Didn’t they denounce the fenian movement from the pulpit and in the confessionbox? And didn’t they dishonor the ashes of Terence Bellew McManus?”
